How to Determine Proper Golf Glove Sizing

The easy way to find the perfect golf glove to improve your game

Golf gloves can be a game-changer for both amateur and pro golfers. They can improve your grip in cold, hot, and inclement weather, and they can protect your hands from nasty blistering and calluses. But what exactly is the process of choosing a golf glove? It might seem easy – you just pick the same size you’d wear in any other glove. However, there’s a bit more to consider before making your selection.

How your glove should fit

There are three key factors to consider when choosing the right golf glove size:

• Your golf glove should be tight – it shouldn’t be so tight that you feel uncomfortable or restricted, but it should feel like a second skin. That means it’s pretty snug across your palm and your fingers. You shouldn’t have any sections of material that are loose or that bunch up.
• The fit around your fingers should be snug, too – you really don’t want extra fabric bunching up around your fingers, as this could impact your grip. If you encounter this, you need to size down.
• You should have room to adjust the closure – when you fasten your glove, keep in mind that you want about a quarter-inch of Velcro® to show. This enables you to adjust your glove as needed as you play. But if there’s no visible Velcro®, you run the risk of your glove being too tight from the get-go or getting progressively tighter and uncomfortable throughout the course.

Other tips to consider

In addition to the three golden rules, it’s important to think about a few other factors that could affect fit.

First, keep in mind that you might need to try a few different sizes to figure out what works best. This is better than guessing. The more you try upfront, the better your chance of landing on the perfect glove.

In the event that you’re between sizes, opt for the smaller glove. Remember, you don’t want a situation where you have any extra fabric bunching around your fingers or your palm. Erring on the side of the small glove helps avoid this.

Also, consider that you might need to wear different sizes in different seasons. During play in the warmer months, your hands might swell or expand, requiring a larger size. The opposite could happen in the colder months, meaning you’ll need a smaller glove.

Lastly, how you care for your glove can also impact the fit over time. If you play in wet weather, or even if your hands just get really sweaty, don’t toss your glove in your bag and leave it. Instead, let it air dry so it maintains its size. You might also consider removing your glove between shots so that it airs out frequently.
